Inbetween May and October in Florence there is an event that is not to miss: a major exhibition on Caravaggio and his school that takes place at the Uffizi, at the Palatine Gallery (Pitti Palace) and at Villa Bardini on the occasion of the IV centennial of the death.

More than 100 works are displayed including the rich collection that is normally hosted in the Florentine museums (Bacchus, Sleeping Cupid, Medusa, The tooth Puller, The Sacrifice of Isaac, and the Knight of Malta), as well as the many works of his school coming from Florence and from other collections, and also two new paintings that are assigned here for the first time to Caravaggio: "Portrait of Maffeo Barberini” (later Pope Urban VIII) and "Portrait of a Cardinal”.

The development of this new art movement started in Florence thanks to Ferdinando I Medici, being the first one to be intrigued and interested in the “new art” of Caravaggio. He bought Bacchus, Medusa and the Tooth Puller. But it was with his son, Cosimo II - already estimator of the Flemings, of small landscapes and nature based paintings – that this movement developped in the city. He was the one that summoned at the Florentine court many of the most famous painters of Caravaggio’s school: Artemisia Gentileschi, Battistello Caracciolo, Theodor Rombouts. Gerrit Honthorst. They all will have go away in 1621, when he died, for lack of patrons.

This exhibition allows us to discover the new way of painting of the very first decades of the XVII century.
Caravaggio abandoned all the rhetorical art’s structures of the previous centuries to show the naked truth. The representation of everyday reality and naturalism rendered through a new use of light and shadow made Caravaggio and therefore his followers, incredible innovators.

The exhibition has the same opening hours of the museums: 8:15 am til 6.50 p.m. The ticket costs euros 14,00 p person (euros 10,00 entrance exhibit + euro 4,00 museum fee) .

Caravaggio is one of the most important Italian painters and so don’t miss this possibility and don’t forget to book your room at Hotel Kursaal & Ausonia. We will help you with the museum reservation at no additional charge!
