During the whole Christmas period, up to the Sunday after the Epiphany there is a very beautiful crèche to admire inside the Cathedral. It consists in an architectural structure erected in the central nave where there are eleven terracotta statues. They derive from sixteenth-century originals by the masters of Terracotta – heir of della Robbia techniques: Benedetto and Santi Buglione, and are modeled in clay by the contemporary Florentine craftsman Carlo Reggioli. The creation had been inspired by by the Domenico Ghirlandaio's Adoration of the Magi, to be seen in the close by “Ospedale degli Innocenti”.During the celebration of the Midnight Mass at Christmas, the Archbishop, accompanied by the Cathedral clergy, places the figure of the newborn Redeemer in the manger.
