The new mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi, has worked hard to organise this event, born a few years ago in the Oltrarno and become an happening that involves the whole city. The event, called “Creative Insomnia”, will open April 30th at 7 pm with a lesson on White Nights by the French sociologist Michel Maffesoli.
Many events, concerts and performances will animate the city. Almost every borough, square and street will have its attractions.The Cantori d’opera by Maggio opera singers (in Piazza Alberti), the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra (orchestra that plays vegetables instead of instruments in Piazza San Lorenzo), the "carnival Bahia”, a marching band that will move from Piazza Santa Croce, gospel choirs in SS Annunziata; but also theatre events like “Carta Bianca” by the French Institute (in piazza Ognissanti).
The White Night in Florence is also culture. Many museums and libraries open until midnight and some even up to 1 .00 am: the Uffizi Gallery, Palazzo Medici Riccardi, the Museum of Natural History, the Bardini Museum and the History and Science Musuem.
The Oblate Library offers a musical reading of Dostoevskij, Schumann and Chopin, as well as a meeting with Desdemona Metus, creator of the only comic book series based in Florence (“The Sleepless”) whose book will be given to the public.
Also the exhibition De Chirico, Max Ernst, Magritte, Balthus. A look into the invisible at Palazzo Strozzi will be open till late.
Everything will end in the Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio May 1st at 6 am with the monologue of Leonardo Romanelli (“I want to be a pstry chef”) when croissants and coffee will be offered to everybody.
