In Italy we sometimes refer to certain days with the Saint's day that is celebrated.
All the Italians know for example that St. Francis day is October 4th, Saint Lucy is December 13th, Saint Stephen is December 26th, St. John is June 24th , Saint Silvester is December 31st..... and San Lawrence (Lorenzo) August 10 th.
August 10th, 258 A.D. Lorenzo was martyred, during the reign of Constantine, and condemned to be burned alive on the grill with hot coals. However, August 10this also the day of the shooting stars, the night when everybody gazes the sky to catch the sight of a star so to make a wish. Over the centuries the two things have merged and so legend says that what you actually see in the sky are not actually stars but the coals (tears) of St. Lawrence that each year to rimind us of the martyrdom he suffered.
The florentine San Lorenzo quarter celebrates August 10th with: - free admission to the Medici Chapels Museum of the with free guided tours at 10 am and 3.30 pm.
- concert in Piazza della Banda Rossini at 9 pm
- free watermelon and lasagna at 10 pm!
